Draft Season is here! Bestball Leagues are flowing! The NFL Preseason is upon us. Drafthustle is here to get you ready to dominate your drafts and get to the money and the trophies! This is part of a series I am titling "Bop or Flop". From each team, I will be choosing one player I am high on (Bop), and one player I am avoiding in fantasy drafts at cost for the 2023 season (Flop). You can check out my rankings here!
Dallas Cowboys
BOP – Dak Prescott, QB
FantasyPros ADP – QB10, #84 Overall
DH Rank – QB8
I am not that much higher on Dak compared to the consensus but is the Cowboy I have the biggest difference in from the consensus. I believe the departure of Kellen Moore will not be as big of a negative as the public thinks. He has finished QB7 or better in PPG in 3 of the last 4 seasons. The departure of Zeke will lead to more passing TDs and Dak rushing near the goal line. Another top 7 season is within Dak’s range of outcomes.
FLOP – Brandin Cooks, WR
FantasyPros ADP – WR39, #96 Overall
DH Rank – WR48
Brandin Cooks is on the best team he has been on in the last 4 seasons after signing with Dallas, but he also has the most target competition he has had in that same time. Ceedee Lamb is the clear #1 on the team, and Michael Gallup is 2 seasons removed from his torn ACL. Brandin Cooks had a subpar season in 2022 which could be a sign of decline. He is more of a WR4/5 than a borderline WR3 for me this year.
New York Giants
BOP – Isaiah Hodgins, WR
FantasyPros ADP – WR78 #232 Overall
DH Rank – WR50
The Giants have a gaggle of slot WRs, a star TE in Darren Waller, but only one true outside WR with size, Isaiah Hodgins. He is what the Giants paid Kenny Golladay to be. He ended 2002 strong scoring at least 12 points in 4 of the last 5 games. He is currently being drafted as a WR7, which is ridiculous. Grab him as a WR5 in every draft you can.
FLOP – None
FantasyPros ADP – N/A
DH Rank – N/A
Other than Saquon Barkley and Darren Waller, no Giants player is being drafted in the top 100 overall. Therefore, it’s tough to designate anyone as a true flop. Daniel Jones is a solid QB2 in Superflex formats. You can literally pick any Giants WR you want in the last 3 rounds of your draft. If you want to take a chance on a Saquon backup, both Matt Breida and Eric Gray are available in the last round. This team is mid fantasy-wise, IMO.
Philadelphia Eagles
BOP – Kenneth Gainwell, RB
FantasyPros ADP – RB60, #186 Overall
DH Rank – RB53
Before the Eagles signed Rashaad Penny and traded a 7th round pick for D’Andre Swift, I was loading up on Kenneth Gainwell in bestball leagues. Even before the recent news, Kenneth Gainwell had lottery ticket appeal. Chances are that both Swift and Penny will miss time and Gainwell will step right in and produce like he did in the playoffs last season. Nab him as RB5 in your drafts and wait patiently for his inevitable starter weeks to come.
FLOP – DeVonta Smith, WR
FantasyPros ADP – WR12, #28 Overall
DH Rank – WR16
DeVonta Smith was great last season, but he really took off in the second half of the season with Dallas Goedert missing games. When Philly’s Big Three is healthy, my bet is on DeVonta being third in the pecking order, and not worth his current 3rd round ADP. The only exception would be if I could stack him with Jalen Hurts, otherwise I’m out.
Washington Commanders
BOP – Antonio Gibson, RB
FantasyPros ADP – RB34, #94 Overall
DH Rank – RB32
Both Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson are being drafted in the 8th round, and Antonio Gibson is my Commander of choice. He is by far the better receiver of the two and it was just 2 years ago when people were drafting Gibson in the 2nd round. With JD McKissic gone, Gibson will absorb that role and makes for a great RB3/Flex option in any league that rewards catches.
FLOP – Terry McLaurin, WR
FantasyPros ADP – WR21, #51 Overall
DH Rank – WR31
Terry McLaurin is arguably a top 10 WR in the league in terms of pure talent, but fantasy football is about more than just talent. His QB situation has been terrible his whole career and the 2023 is probably the worst version. Sam Howell will have to prove he is a starter in this league, but I am less than optimistic. Jahan Dotson will garner a hefty share of targets in a limited passing game, capping McLaurin’s upside. If his ADP stays at WR21, I will not own any McLaurin in 2023.
